Delivering at Jersey City Medical Center.jpg

“I recently delivered my second child at JCMC with the midwife from Women’s Health on Grove Street and they were great. It was so convenient to get to, especially with a toddler at home and the threat of the Virus. The room was enormous and very nice which was perfect because you were not allowed to leave the room at all with COVID. The best part, we could order food from wherever and someone goes and picks up from the lobby. Every local family should learn more and tour the maternity wing, it’s an amazing option right in our backyard.”

“My daughter wasn’t due until June but my experience with her was amazing in JCMC. The nurses were so sweet and kind, very helpful. The lactation consultant was extrodinary, She kept checking up on us and making sure my daughter was receiving colostrum as she should. My daughter was so small but she was thriving so luckily we were not sent to NICU. The room was clean, I was tested for COVID, all the nurses and doctors were very careful and took precautions, and the hospital food was actually real good. The last night we stayed there they made us such a lovely dinner.”

Hudson County’s Leading NICU Marks Seven Years CLABSI-Free

Hudson County’s top Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) received the extreme honor of marking seven years without a Central Line-associated Bloodstream Infection (CLABSI) in one of its neonatal patients. Attributed to their stringent protocols regarding sanitization and hygiene, this extraordinary milestone is another historic first for the Maternal Child Services department.

“We are the first and only hospital in the region to offer the NICVIEW system, a webcam that provides family members with a real-time streaming view of their infant in the NICU.” Leah Dungee, MSN, RNC-NIC, Director of Nursing for Maternal Child Services.

“Jersey City Medical Center’s NICU is the only provider of complex specialized newborn care in Hudson County, and this remarkable achievement is a testament to the dedication of our talented and skilled staff,” said Michael Prilutsky, President and CEO of JCMC. “I join our leadership team and medical staff in applauding their diligence and hard work on behalf of our smallest and most vulnerable patients.”

In 2019, the NICU at JCMC made headlines when a trained team of specialists delivered Hudson County’s first set of quintuplets. The only Level III Unit in Hudson County, the Unit is staffed by experts that include dual board-certified neonatologists and specialized neonatal intensive care nurses.

“Being pregnant with twins was concerning to me and I wanted to make sure if any issues arised they would be well taken care of. In speaking with my Doctor, I found out that JCMC has the same level III NICU as Hackensack. As my belly started to get bigger and having more pelvic pain, I realized if the twins came I would not have had enough time to make it to Hackensack and at 35 weeks and 1 day, my twins gave me a strong contraction at 5 am that I could not ignore. Upon arriving at Jersey City Medical Center, they immediately hooked me up to the monitors and found both my twins heart beats. The nurse could see how scared and unsure I was in delivering so early - she asked me if I was okay and took the time to explain everything that they where going to do. EVERYTHING WENT SO FAST after that. They gave me the COVID-19 test, got 2 IV hooked up because with twins your more likely to have to get a blood transfusion. THAT WAS SCARY TO THINK. My Doctor, Dr. Diego Barbara Mijares from Metropolitan Family Health Network on Garfield Ave came within 30 minutes after getting the call. Every nurse and doctor supported my decision in trying to deliver them vaginally. Besides Dr. Barbara their was another doctor there to ensure the babies were okay once they were born. The room was packed with nurses, each baby bed had its own staff of nurses to attend to my twins. I went into the room at 5:25 pm and delivered my baby girl at 5:40 pm.

JCMC is a teaching hospital and I consented to having some medical interns in the delivery room. To know I was part of a learning experience for these wonderful nurses helped me stay calm during delivery. The nurses would ask me if I was okay, to breath, and even asked if my fiancé was okay or needed anything. Following the delivery, they brought a wheelchair so I could go directly to see my babies in the NICU. As I entered all the nurses congratulated me. Each twin had their own nurse, they did not have the same one. That was perfect for me, because that means I knew each one was getting well taken care of individually.

What I loved about going to the NICU department was how much security there was. To gain access you must buzz in and show your face to the camera. Immediately upon entry to the NICU you must scrub your hands and are required to keep your mask on at all times. Every time I came in the twin’s nurses would come over and give me a thorough update…. How much they ate, what test where ran and what I need to sign for. Anything strange that they where concerned about and what they where keeping an eye on… The Doctor on shift would also go to every baby's parent and spoke at length about tests that were being ran and what the results meant.

I felt very cared for during my stay at Jersey City medical Center and felt confident my babies were getting the same top quality care. Once I was discharged, my twins still had to stay in the NICU for monitoring. It was amazing that I was allowed to come see them at any time, I was pumping and could show up at 2 AM with milk if I wanted to . Temperature was taken at every visit and security personal come up with me to the floor. Even though I was no longer a patient, I loved how attentive the staff of nurses on each shift was to me… Always asking if i needed anything or how to make me more comfortable with my pain. I had a lactation nurse visit me while in the NICU and was given a private room and my own breast pump. The day we got to take the twins home, the nurses sat down with us and explained EVERYTHING to look for when caring for an infant at home. They gave me some supplies to take home along with a cute diaper bag and goodies inside. I can not explained how blessed and happy I was to have my two littles ones healthy and safe at JCMC. Not once during their stay in NICU was I concerned about them. They always took my calls and made sure the camera was on them so I could log-in to see them from home.

I will recommended JCMC to any mommy in our area. I am glad I never insisted on going somewhere else. If I was to deliver again, I would go to JCMC without a doubt.”
