Hamilton Park, one of Jersey City’s most historic areas, has remained the centerpiece of the Hamilton Park Historic District in Downtown Jersey City from the time of its inception in 1851. Tree-lined streets with rows of Victorian brownstone homes border the 5.4-acre residential square, giving the area its picturesque streetscape. It was John B. Coles, a Federalist from New York, who initiated the plan for a public park in Jersey City to be named for Alexander Hamilton in 1800. Today it is one of Jersey City’s most cherished Landmarks

The History of a Jersey City Landmark Neighborhood

Much has changed since the inception of Hamilton Park, and even still from a decade ago when the neighborhood’s energies were directed at battling the crime and drug activity in and around the park. Many houses were abandoned and served as a hide out. Many of the original residents were essentially forced to leave their homes for their safety. Now, once again considered to be a safe place for families and residents to enjoy is home to many new residents, as well as the ones who were born and bred here.

Hamilton Park House Tours, an initiative centered on highlighting the beauty of these Historic Homes, have been a yearly event since it started in 1977. This led to the City’s petition to place Hamilton Park on the National list of Historic places in 1979.

More on Hamilton Park, Jersey City History

The Hamilton Park Historic District is in the former town of Van Vorst, now Jersey City. Hamilton Park developed around the central park, or square, after the Civil War. Until 1804 the main livelihood of this area was farming. The low-lying Hudson River shore had a marshy quality similar to the undeveloped portion of the Hackensack meadowlands today. A few land formations existed, primarily in the Jersey City area - one of these was in the vicinity of what is now Hamilton Park. This virgin terrain was the home ground of a few thousand natives of the Algonquin nation. They belonged to the Hackensack branch of the Lenni Lenape tribe and were later known to the English as the Delawares. These Indians taught the Dutch how to grow maize, beans and squash.
